A majority of voters don’t favor building a wall on the southern border and even more oppose Donald Trump using emergency executive powers to fund the wall, by 66-31 percent. In the latest Quinnipiac poll, independent voters disapprove of Trump’s bogus emergency declaration by a 44-point margin, 70-26 percent. Trump promised incessantly on the campaign trail that Mexico would pay for the wall, and now he’s stuck American taxpayers with the bill.
Women are the main driver behind the 55 percent opposition to building the wall, with 62 percent of female voters against it. Men are divided almost evenly on the matter, with 49 percent supporting the wall and 47 percent opposed.
“We didn’t want it in the first place and we certainly don’t want it built by emergency executive order,’ say wall-weary voters in big numbers,” said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.
Voters also broadly favor a House-passed bill requiring background checks on all gun purchases, including those made online and at gun shows. The recently passed legislation draws 86 percent support among voters, including strong support from both Republicans (80-17 percent) and gun owners (76-20 percent). The bill passed the House only because of the Democratic majority . . . it will fail in the GOP-controlled Senate because Republicans continue to ignore the wishes of the public in favor of $$$$ from the NRA.
