Speaking of gun control . . .

In the wake of the murders in Virginia Beach, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam called for a special session of the General Assembly to consider several common-sense gun control laws.

As expected, Virginia Republicans responded by attacking the Governor’s call as a “cheap political trick.”  Then, they all rushed to the bank to cash their checks from the NRA.

Here’s a little something Republicans don’t want you to know.

  • The Virginia Beach killer used .45-caliber handguns with extended magazines, each magazine holding 30 rounds.
  • For many years, the standard issue US military handgun was a Model 1911 .45-caliber pistol.  The magazine held SEVEN rounds.
  • The .45 was replaced with a 9mm Beretta, Model M9.  The magazine held FIFTEEN rounds.
  • In January 2017 the Army announced the adoption of a new handgun manufactured by Sig-Sauer, The full-sized model will be known as the M17 and the smaller-sized carry model will be known as the M18.  Both weapons have a 17-round magazine.

Imagine that . . . a military weapon designed to kill carries fewer rounds than the Virginia Beach killer loaded into his pistols.  High-capacity magazines for most common handguns are readily available on eBay and at many gun shops.  The AR-15 — weapon of choice for most mass murderers — has a standard magazine of 10 rounds but 20- and 30-round mags are common.  Yet, Republicans refuse to pass legislation limiting the size of magazines.
